Food for Health not Wealth conference
Last month (July) we hosted a conference in Bradford for those wanting to broaden their understanding of the food agenda and how we can build sustainable and inclusive food networks.
This thought-provoking event featured a range of speakers who have a wealth of knowledge, experience and networks in food sustainability and food insecurity. When you hear the news and know of people who are going hungry and cannot feed their children, it is easy to think that nothing is being done. Hearing and listening to the passion of the speakers yesterday gave a clearer idea that, yes, there are people out there trying to make a difference.
An enormous amount of information was shared and many exciting initiatives explained – check out the contributing organisations to get an idea of what is happening both locally and nationally with this agenda.
- The event was kicked off by a joint singing experience led by Emma Baylin of Shared Harmonies to get us relaxed and smiling.

- Andrew Forsey, National Director, Feeding Britain, gave a national perspective and the journey so far.
- Tim Howells, Senior Public Health Specialist at Bradford Council, talked about the Food Strategy, by Bradford for Bradford, and their Living Well campaign.

- Tess Wilkins, FoodSavers Network Manager, shared the latest updates on FoodSavers.
- Apriljoy Serrant gave a great presentation on the art of resilience, which as well as providing useful tools for those in the room, gave great insights into how other people see themselves in the world and what we can do to support them.
- Nathan Atkinson Co-founder of Rethink Food, was inspirational and amazed us at what he and his partner are doing to help children and empower them.
- Soraya Overend from Inn Churches Cooking talked us through their Jamie’s Ministry of Food Cooking Programmes and their plans for the future.
Many thanks to all those who joined us.
